Father's Day

Zach and Chuck Remembering Dad.
For 25-year-old area singer-songwriter Zach, losing his father, Chuck Freidhof, to pancreatic cancer in February was a tough blow. Always a healthy man, the 55-year-old Freidhof was diagnosed last fall with one of the most lethal forms of cancer. Freidhof worked with his son as manager and soundman, traveling with him as he expanded the base he started building when he was fresh out of high school and released the first of his four CDs back in 1999.
"None of our family is musical, so I got all the saved-up genes," says Zach.
"But ever since I started music, he was supportive. In the last four or five years he had gone full-time into management, trying to help me out and make my career move forward."
Now Zach has organized a tribute to his dad that's also a benefit for PanCAN, a national pancreatic cancer support group. Dubbed "An Evening for Chuck," it takes place from 1-6 p.m. Sunday, September 10, at Musica (17 Maiden Lane, near Market and Main streets, Akron). Zach will open with a solo acoustic set and close with a band set featuring special guests. Charlie Brown, Tracey Thomas, Ryan Humbert, the Speedbumps and Jeff and Kira from Jaded Era will also perform, and there'll be food and raffles. Donation: $5. The event also includes a motorcycle/vehicle run at 11 a.m., leaving from Liberty Harley Davidson (334 E. Hines Hill Rd., Boston Heights) and ending at Musica at noon. Registration, $10, starts at 10 a.m. at Liberty.
