Pacific East, Cabin Restaurant, Quince Restaurant, Kan Zaman, Pho Que Huong

Pacific East has been open three weeks and already it has attracted a cadre of loyal customers. An offshoot of the popular Cleveland Heights original (1763 Coventry Rd., 216.320.2302), this location, in bustling ETON Chagrin Boulevard (28601 Chagrin Blvd., 216.765.1305), is a welcome addition to the East Side scene. Though small, the restaurant makes great use of the L-shaped space. An angled black-granite sushi bar seats about a dozen while the snug dining room, with walls the color of salmon roe, seats an additional 40. "ETON is the ideal setting for us," says chef-owner Freeman Ngo. The sizeable menu features the expected soups, sushi, sashimi, rolls, tempura and udon noodle bowls, but diners would be remiss if they passed on amazing small plates such as grilled squid with grated ginger ($7.50) or hamachi kama ($8.95), broiled yellowtail collar beloved for its fatty richness. Pacific East is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday, and dinner on Sunday.

Michael Herschman is settling into his new role as executive chef at the Cabin Restaurant at Mario's International Spa (35 E. Garfield Rd., Aurora, 330.562.9171). Housed in an 1850s log cabin, the restaurant is a casually elegant spot for a romantic night out. Graced with a wood-burning oven, Herschman is turning out pizzas topped with wild mushroom, pecorino and truffle, and butter-poached lobster and garlic. Starters include lobster bisque, crispy veal sweetbreads with pistachio mustard, and the chef's signature sweet and spicy calamari. For an entrée, diners can select from lobster ricotta ravioli, porcini-dusted halibut, or wood-fired prosciutto-wrapped chicken, among others. Sides include mushroom risotto, pecorino mashed potatoes, wood-fired autumn vegetables and gorgonzola creamed spinach.

Described as "comfort food with an Italian twist," Quince Restaurant (8074 Columbia Rd., 440.427.8100) has opened in Olmsted Falls. Formerly Steamers, the restaurant features the cuisine of chef Gregg Korney.

Kan Zaman (1917 W. 25th St., Cleveland, 216.685.1500) is still in the hookah business, thanks to the exception for shops that earn the bulk of their money through tobacco sales, says owner Wally Ayyad. But the food end of the operation has moved down the road to 1616 W. 25th St. (216.621.2222). Items such as falafel, baba, shish tawook and shawarma are available for lunch and dinner.

Pho Que Huong (5107 Detroit Rd., 216.631.6666), a restaurant serving Vietnamese and Chinese food, has opened in the space formerly occupied by Long Phung. It's open for dinner seven days.
