Govind Namdev Breaks Silence on Kala Hiran, Claims He Was Misled About Films Content

Veteran actor Govind Namdev has stepped forward to distance himself from the film Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legacy, insisting he was duped about what the project actually entailed. In a June 14, 2026 interview with Amar Ujala, the 71‑year‑old said he had initially believed he was working on a different film called Sambhal.

According to Namdev, he was told his role would be confined to a courtroom scene based on documented legal proceedings. He added that he had no idea the story would feature a character resembling Bollywood superstar Salman Khan. "As soon as I watched the trailer, I was shaken to the core," Namdev told the newspaper. "I instantly understood that the project is completely different from what I was shot for." He went on to say he felt "used" and "kept in the dark."

Namdev clarified that he has a cordial relationship with Salman Khan and would never knowingly participate in a project that could tarnish the actor’s reputation. He also stressed that he does not identify with any narrative linked to the Bishnoi community or the gang references that have surrounded the case.

The film has ignited controversy because it bears striking resemblances to the 1998 blackbuck poaching case involving Salman Khan. In that incident, the actor was accused of hunting two blackbucks in Kankani village near Jodhpur, Rajasthan, during the shooting of Hum Saath Saath Hain. The Bishnoi community filed a complaint, and the case has remained a high‑profile legal matter for over two decades.

While the makers of Kala Hiran describe the project as a work of fiction, the recently released teaser showcases a character named Ayaan Khan, played by Kashif Iqbal Khan, whose appearance and mannerisms closely echo those of Salman Khan. This similarity has prompted accusations that the film infringes on the superstar’s personality and publicity rights.

In response, Salman Khan’s legal team approached the Delhi High Court, seeking an immediate and permanent stay on the film’s production, promotion, and release. The court has issued notices to the filmmakers, requesting their response.

According to reports, the legal action was filed on June 2, 2026, with the court seeking an interim injunction to halt the film’s release. The lawsuit alleges that the film portrays an ongoing legal matter in a misleading manner and damages the actor’s reputation.

The controversy has highlighted the growing tension between creative freedom and personality rights in Indian cinema. It also underscores the legal challenges filmmakers face when depicting real‑life events that involve public figures.

Govind Namdev’s statement arrives at a time when the film’s producers are under scrutiny. The makers maintain that the film is a fictional narrative and that the character of Ayaan Khan is not intended to be a direct portrayal of Salman Khan.

The Delhi High Court’s notice to the filmmakers is expected to prompt a formal response. If the court grants the stay, the film’s release could be delayed or halted altogether.

The situation remains fluid. While the legal proceedings are underway, the film’s production team has not yet confirmed whether they will proceed with the project or make changes to address the concerns raised by Salman Khan’s team.

For now, Govind Namdev’s public distancing from the film adds a new dimension to the controversy. His claim that he was misled about the film’s content may influence public perception and could impact the legal case against the filmmakers.

The outcome of the Delhi High Court’s decision will determine whether Kala Hiran can be released to the public or whether it will be shelved pending further legal review.

The case serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between artistic expression and the protection of individual rights in the rapidly evolving landscape of Indian cinema.
