The long‑awaited return of Master Chief is finally on the horizon – and it’s landing on a platform that’s never seen the franchise before. Halo: Campaign Evolved, a remake of the 2001 classic Halo: Combat Evolved, will hit shelves on July 28 2026 for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S. Developed by the newly‑formed Halo Studios, the team that took the series from 343 Industries in 2024, the game runs on Unreal Engine 5, promising a fresh visual experience.

Pre‑orders are already heating up on the PlayStation Store, and the numbers are telling. In the United Kingdom, the standard edition tops the pre‑order charts, with the premium edition also landing in the top five. Across the Atlantic, the premium edition holds the seventh spot in the United States, while in France it’s the premium version that dominates the digital charts. Germany follows the UK’s lead, with the standard edition as the best‑selling pre‑order. These figures show that Master Chief still pulls a sizable crowd on Sony’s platform.

Sony has leaned heavily into the PlayStation 5 in its promotional push. The console is front‑and‑center in trailers, screenshots, and social‑media teasers, and the launch is billed as a “multi‑platform surprise.” The move has sparked speculation about Microsoft’s future exclusivity strategy, especially given the franchise’s Xbox‑only heritage.

Not all of Microsoft’s iconic IPs are making the jump, however. Gears of War: E‑Day, a brand‑new prequel, was announced as an Xbox exclusive during the Xbox Games Showcase. Microsoft confirmed the exclusivity a month before the reveal, and the game will not see a PlayStation release – a decision that contrasts with the 2024 Gears of War remaster, which was available on both Xbox and PlayStation.

Cross‑platform play is a key selling point for Halo: Campaign Evolved. The title will support cross‑play and cross‑progression across all consoles and PC during online co‑op. While the original competitive multiplayer mode is absent, players can still enjoy four‑player online co‑op and two‑player split‑screen on consoles.

Eurogamer’s Dom Peppiatt, who admitted he wasn’t sure he’d love the demo, called the remake a “reinvention” that stitches together the best bits of the original and its six sequels. He praised the updated visuals, redesigned missions, and fresh weapons.

Microsoft’s willingness to cross the console divide isn’t new. Forza Horizon 5 and Sea of Thieves both made the jump to PlayStation, demonstrating that the company is open to sharing certain titles with its rival.

The release comes at a time when Microsoft is probing a broader multi‑platform strategy. Halo’s roots trace back to 2001, when Halo: Combat Evolved launched the original Xbox. Since then, the series has sold more than 81 million copies worldwide. Microsoft Gaming’s traditional focus has been on first‑party exclusives, so putting Halo on PlayStation may signal a shift in how the company approaches exclusivity.

From day one, the game will be available to Xbox Game Pass subscribers, and it will be sold in both standard and premium editions. The premium version adds the Foundry Armory Pack, which unlocks legendary looks for Master Chief’s Mark V Mjolnir armor.
