House of the Dragon Season 3 Set to Premiere June 21 on HBO, Bringing Eight Episodes of Targaryen Drama to Fans

When the sun sets on the Iron Throne, a new wave of fire and blood is about to ignite. On Sunday, June 21, 2026, HBO will unleash the next chapter of House of the Dragon with the season‑three premiere.

The 9 p.m. ET/PT slot on the linear channel will also carry the show on HBO Max, where eight brand‑new episodes will drop weekly, wrapping up on August 9. Each episode promises to add another layer to the Targaryen saga.

Created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal, the series adapts Martin’s 2018 novel Fire & Blood, which takes viewers back nearly 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. Season 3 will follow the dynasty as it faces the devastating war of succession known as the Dance of the Dragons.

Condal will helm the season alone, after wrapping production in October 2025 following a March‑to‑October shooting schedule. HBO’s confidence is clear: a fourth season has already been ordered.

The returning cast includes Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Steve Toussaint, Rhys Ifans, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn‑Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall, Matthew Needham, James Norton, Tom Bennett, Kieran Bew, Kurt Egyiawan, Freddie Fox, Clinton Liberty, Gayle Rankin, Abubakar Salim, Tom Cullen, Tommy Flanagan, Dan Fogler, Joplin Sibtain, and Barry Sloane.

Season 1 earned a 90 % Fresh rating from critics and an 82 % audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, while Season 2 dipped to 84 % Fresh among critics and 72 % among viewers. Critics are divided on the first four episodes of Season 3: The Hollywood Reporter calls the series “too packed, too narratively rushed” and notes that the abundance of dragons and special effects can feel anticlimactic. GamesRadar gives the season a 4‑out‑of‑5 rating, praising the opening Battle of the Gullet and calling the season a “thrilling fresh start.” Decider highlights a “radical regrouping” after a disappointing Season 2 finale but worries about a lack of catharsis. Collider describes the first four episodes as “ultra‑long” with “massive set pieces” and “powerful performances.” CBR warns that “time will tell” whether the series can keep up appearances. TheWrap emphasizes the emotional devastation of the conflict, while IndieWire notes more interaction among the core cast. Variety focuses on the people behind the dragons, calling them “just the CGI flying lizards on top.”

The world premiere of Season 3 took place in London, though details of the attendance were not disclosed.

In short, House of the Dragon Season 3 will launch on June 21, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max, offering eight episodes that delve deeper into the Targaryen civil war. With a solid cast, a dedicated showrunner, and a mix of critical responses, the season is set to continue the franchise’s exploration of power, family, and fire.
