Micron Unveils $10 B Research Campus in Boise to Drive Memory Innovation
In a bold move that could reshape the memory landscape, Micron Technology announced Thursday that it will build a new research campus in Boise, Idaho, investing a staggering $10 billion over the next decade.
The campus, dubbed Micron Research Labs, is set to bring together hundreds of researchers, industry partners, academics and government scientists to push the limits of memory technology, compute architecture, chip manufacturing and packaging. It will be a full‑campus hub hosting conferences, workshops and innovation forums, though Micron has yet to pick a specific site in Boise and will announce the location next year.
This announcement follows Micron’s rapid expansion of its Boise manufacturing complex. Two new fabrication plants—each valued at roughly $25 billion—are under construction on the company’s southeast Boise site. Together, these projects represent more than $60 billion in capital spending, forming part of a broader $250 billion plan that Micron has committed to U.S. manufacturing and research through 2035.
“Micron Research Labs will be a dedicated home for long‑horizon innovation, the kind of research that sits upstream of every product we build,” said EVP and Chief Technology and Products Officer Scott DeBoer. The labs will also be “connected to” Micron’s research and technology facilities across the United States, Europe, Japan, India, Singapore and Taiwan.
Micron’s CEO, Sanjay Mehrotra, highlighted the strategic timing: the initiative builds on the company’s belief that artificial intelligence is reshaping the world and that memory is a core component of that transformation.
Collaboration with academia is a cornerstone of the plan. Stanford University President Jonathan Levin announced that Stanford would be among the partners. Levin emphasized that the labs would enable long‑term investment in fundamental research and innovation needed to keep America at the forefront. No local universities were named in the release.
The project has drawn praise from several public officials. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, speaking on behalf of the Trump administration, said the labs would strengthen American innovation, create jobs and ensure memory does not limit progress. Boise Mayor Lauren McLean highlighted the opportunity for local residents, noting that the campus would give Boise students a chance to pursue careers in research, engineering or advanced manufacturing without leaving home.
Apple CEO Tim Cook also weighed in. Cook said Micron has been an important partner for Apple’s products and that the research labs will “drive breakthroughs in memory and computing for decades to come.” His statement was included in a press release that also noted ongoing disputes over memory pricing and manufacturing between Apple and Micron.
Micron was founded in 1978 in a Boise dental office basement and has grown into a $1 trillion‑market‑cap company. It is the only major U.S. manufacturer of computer memory and one of the “Big Three” memory makers worldwide, alongside Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.
The company’s stated goal for the research labs is to push the limits of memory technology in an era where demand for high‑bandwidth memory (HBM) and other advanced memory types is surging, driven largely by artificial‑intelligence workloads. Micron’s own HBM chips have been a key factor in the company’s recent market‑cap growth.
While the release did not specify how many jobs the research campus would create in Boise, Micron’s broader U.S. investment plan is expected to generate approximately 90 000 direct and indirect jobs across the semiconductor supply chain.
Micron’s announcement comes at a time when the semiconductor industry is under intense scrutiny from policymakers and competitors. The company’s commitment to a U.S. research campus signals its intent to maintain leadership in a technology sector that is increasingly viewed as critical to national security.
